  • Description
Set in an unnamed African country, V. S. Naipaul's A Bend in the River is narrated by Salim, a young man from an Indian family of traders long resident on the coast. He believes The world is what it is; men who are nothing, who allow themselves to become nothing, have no place in it. So he has taken the initiative; left the coast; acquired his own shop in a small, growing city in the continent's remote interior and is selling sundries - little more than this and that, really - to the natives. This spot, this 'bend in the river', is a microcosm of post-colonial Africa at the time of Independence: a scene of chaos, violent change, warring tribes, ignorance, isolation and poverty. And from this rich landscape emerges one of the author's most potent works - a truly moving story of historical upheaval and social breakdown.

    His great novel of Africa

The life of Salim, a Muslim of Indian origin narrates his life in an unknown country in Africa. He settles in a town near a bend in the river.
Naipaul spends a great deal of pages to explain the characters and after that he just takes us to the journey of awe and inspiration. The brilliance lies in the sensory elements Naipaul has put up to state the feelings of the narrator which is true not only in his condition in Africa but is timeless, ageless and universal to all of us.
    A great...

Sluggish but Great Story on an Extraordinary Plot

A Bend in the River is a very famous book and I was eager to read it for a long time. When I started reading, initially it provoked an intense feeling that one gets while reading an extraordinary modern classic.

But as I carried on, I found it to be a slog, dull storyline that has been presented. There is no question about the expertise of Naipaul and it is reflected in many parts (rather sentences) in this novel, but to deal with such a sluggish, faint story and repeated explanation on the...

Brilliantly woven with all the flavours of Africa.

This novel is about Salim, an Indian origin Muslim boy who inspired by the life's idiosyncrasies, sets sail to an unknown African small town and how he takes on his life. This novel is poignantly brilliant, aptly humorous and a microcosm of post-war Africa and it's various avatar. A brilliant novel with vintage Africa.
