A Free Man presents a no-holds-barred look at urban poverty through the story of Mohammed Ashraf, one among the millions of invisible men struggling to make a living in a big, bad metropolis.

    Summary Of The Book

A Free Man features the story of Mohammed Ashraf, an ordinary man just about coping with the daily grind in the city of Delhi. His story is the story of the hordes of people who lead similar lives, invisible people whose lives count for nothing unlike those of their rich counterparts.

Ashraf is a 40-year-old homeless day labourer. In the past, he has worked as a butcher, a tailor, and even as an electrician’s apprentice. He has lived in cities like Surat, Hyderabad, Patna, Calcutta, and Mumbai. As he goes about his daily life, the readers are introduced to the lives of the have-nots, how they merely exist from one day to another, with no future to look forward to and no purpose to call their own.

Some of the other interesting characters featured include Ashraf’s friends Lalloo and Rehaan, a barber named Bhagwan Das, and Sharmaji, an officer whose job is to catch beggars and have them tried and punished in court.

The author gives shocking glimpses into the world of the poor, a world where dreaming seems futile as all efforts to rise above a life of poverty and squalor repeatedly fall flat. He writes about everything from illegal bars to cheap liquor, from organ-selling rackets to public apathy. Through his hard-hitting narrative, he reintroduces the readers to a world they are familiar with deep down and one they choose to ignore out of apathy, guilt, and unease.

The book closely chronicles the life of an invisible, free man, a life lived in inescapable loneliness and perpetual limbo. It is gutsy and candid, funny and poignant, keeping the readers gripped throughout.

A Free Man was published in 2011 by Random House India. It is based on five years of research, during which the author spent most of his time studying the lives of the sidelined citizens of India at close quarters. It has received high critical acclaim for its candid, riveting reportage and exceptional narrative.

    A really great book!

Bought this book on Flipkart after reading the excerpt that was published in the Caravan Magazine. Flipkart, as usual, gives a great deal and backs it up with great service.

One of the better things I have read in some time.

    Brilliant book!

One of the best books ive read in a long time. thoroughly engaging. Recommended for anyone who is tired of the uber glossy, candyfloss depiction of urban India. The book is liberally laced with witty one liners and is a brilliant account of the life on the streets. The characters stay with you long after u've put the book down. A free man sets some serious benchmark for Non fiction Indian writers.

Book which fills your urge to read ...

    a. Initially attempted to read this during to-fro to office , but sooner realized this
would kill the feel of book .
-> So read it when you can spend at-least 30-40 min at one go .
10-15 min reading will kill it

    b. Also this is not a book where author gives u some life changing lesson by the example
-> It meant for pure pleasure of reading and experience the feel which author tries
    to share with readers.

Guys , by the end of journey with main character ...

    Wonderful!

An honest portrayal of the story of a common man of the labour community told very sympathetically and in fluid prose. We meet these people like Ashraf but never have a chance to get a glimpse into their life. The writing of Aman Sethi gives us an extraordinary insight into an ordinary life.

Story of the Rolling stone who never gathered moss

This book is about a homeless guy who has lived in 6 cities in different parts of the country. He cannot call any city his home though in most of the cities, he has stayed for more than two years. Finally he begins to search his roots but lands up in the city he liked the most, Kolkata. Most of the 'migrant generation' of today's India can relate themselves to this Bihari Muslim man named Ashraf. Kudos to Aman and I urge you to write on the 'migrant generation' who change cities every two or ...

    Wonderful Read

Sethi's book is a complex narrative in the lives of people who cannot call any single place their home. They do not associate with their past or are looking at a planned future. The books is a study in rootlesness. What is it to live without somebody to worry about you if you went missing or died in an accident.
The book is well written and moves quickly. Unputdownable!
