Summary of the Book
J. L. Mehta takes readers through the intricate details of the political and military history of Medieval India, examining how India has come to become a country and what nationalism has meant over the centuries. The book lays special emphasis on the advent of Islam to India and shows how politics morphed simultaneously. Offering various travelogues written by people such as Ibn Battuta, Abdur Razzak, Marco Polo and Nicolo Conti among others, the book examines how the Kanauj dynasty began to fade away. It progresses to the advent of Mahmud of Ghazni and his routine pillaging of the Indian subcontinent. Later the book moves on to gripping accounts of the two holocausts in Indian history before the establishment of the Delhi Sultanate. More than half the book is devoted to the Islamic administration, offering insights not found in other books. An illuminating read, this book invites readers into the history of India, an invitation too alluring to forgo.
