  • Description

    W. Richard Stevens and Stephen A. Rago’s Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment, published by Pearson, is a comprehensive book for Computer Science students and professionals. This edition discusses the latest developments and also embellishes upon the standard for multithread programming and the final POSIX.1 standard. It additionally indulges all the new examples running into 10,000 lines of coding for Linux, Solaris, Free BSD, and the MAC OS X. The book provides the overview to the UNIX environment and then forays into implementations. It then branches out into the different processes that fall under the umbrella of the UNIX environment. Whether it is Files and Directories, Threads, Signals, System Data Files and Information, Process Information and Daemon processes, this book does more than just dispel doubts about the subject. The foreword to this edition is written by Dennis Ritchie, and it contains a UNIX themed Dilbert comic strip by Scott Adams.

This book is one of those Unix books that not only starts from the basics and forwards towards complex parts Unix OS, it also lays a solid theoretical foundation for many of those features. Unix, though being very advanced, were not standardised in a uniform way. There are lot of system calls with varying parameter passing conventions and behaviour. This books accepts these inconsistencies and shows how to cope with that. Rather than targeting a single Unix like OS (such as Linux), the book d...

Good Book to Start Unix Programming...

If you ever wondered how commands like ls, cd work in shell, then you are going the very book which will enable you yo write those programs. Its my basic book in Unix Programming. This book discusses various system calls of available in Unix system and how to use them. However on the downside you should have basic or intermediate C Skills. Introductory chapters may be bit overwhelming with information but latter chapters clear all the air.
