By British novelist George Meredith, The Adventures of Harry Richmond (1870–1871) is a romantic novel that alternates between picaresque and melodramatic sections. Meredith intended for the book to be a widespread hit, but the list of reprints indicates that only happened during Meredith's late Victorian and early Edwardian prime when some readers found his highly-wrought language to be a hindrance.
