Summary of the Book
This novel is set in the backdrop of the Sannyasi Rebellion in the late 18th century. Its significance was enhanced by the fact that it became synonymous with the freedom struggle in India. The national song of our country, Vande Mataram, was first published in this novel. It is the story of a couple, Mahendra and Kalyani, who are stuck in their own village due to a famine. They decide to move to a city for a better life. In the course of their journey, they get separated. Kalyani, with her infant, has to run through a forest to avoid man-hunters. She loses consciousness on the bank of a river at one point. Satyananda, a Hindu monk finds her and the baby and takes care of them. Will Mahendra find his wife and his child?
About Bankim Chandra Chatterji
Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay or Bankim Chandra Chatterji was a Bengali poet, writer and journalist, best known for penning India’s national song, Vande Mataram. Some of his most famous works are Mrinalini, Indira, Chandrasekhar, Rajsimha, and Rajani among others.
