"The tide of Mandal (Commission) and (Ram) Mandir seemed too strong to turn away without a great sacrifice and perhaps they (the Indian political establishment) calculate that only Rajiv's sacrifice could turn the tide in favour of the Congress, which it actually did. In that sense, Rajiv was a great martyr, perhaps unknowingly, to the cause of Brahminism."
