Khushwant Singh: The Lawyer, Journalist, Politician, and Literary Genius

Khushwant Singh was born in the year 1915 in Hadani in British India and now in Pakistan. He studied in Delhi, Lahore, and London before starting his career as a lawyer in Lahore Court in 1939. After eight years of legal practice, India got independence in 1947 and Singh joined the Indian Foreign Service and he served in Canada and London. In 1951, he joined All India Radio as a journalist and then, he worked with UNESCO in the Department of Mass Communication in Paris. In the year 1956, Khushwant Singh decided to work on editorial services. He worked on multiple reputed newspapers and magazines as the editor, and also published novels and short stories that earned him a wide reputation.

The Progressive Writer and His Thought Provoking Literature

Khushwant Singh’s writing is highly inspired by the partition of India which is a recurring subject of many of his books. Through his writings, Khushwant Singh often criticised the establishment and gave an outsider’s perspective on various contemporary subjects. In 1974, he was awarded Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in India. But, he returned it as a protest against the Operation Blue Star in 1984. If you are yet to start exploring the world of Khushwant Singh’s books available online, then here are a few to start with.

Train To Pakistan

Singh witnessed the bloodshed on both sides of the Indo-Pak border during the partition of India and this novel is an honest and accurate account of the same. It is a small, to-the-point book with characters that are real. This book neither questions the validity of the partition, nor it places the blame on anyone. It explores a time and place that was unfortunate and should not be forgotten. If you are curious about the partition that led to the brutal displacement of more than 14 million people on the basis of their religion, then buy this Khushwant Singh’s book online.

Delhi: A Novel

Through humour and history, Khushwant Singh explores Delhi in this novel. The story unfolds through the relationship between a journalist and eunuch. This novel has many characters set in different time periods in the history of Delhi and gives an account of those times through interesting interactions.

Truth, Love & A Little Malice

This is an autobiography that also explores Khushwant Singh’s relations with many political dignitaries. There are also controversial excerpts in this book due to which its publication was held up for over five years due to a court case filed against the released of this Khushwant Singh books .
