Summary of the Book
There is a story in Gotham, of a dark creature in the shadows, one that lurks and breaks the spines of criminal scumbags who plague the city with their greed. In the gas-lit 1880s, such a story is a little more than myth. It ascends to urban legend, and the creature is described as having claws, wings and the very semblance of a bat. Bruce Wayne is a wealthy businessman on a tour of Europe. In Vienna, he meets Sigmund Freud and reveals to him that he continuously dreams of his parents' murder, and wants to return to his home: Gotham. On returning, he meets Inspector Gordon who informs him that organized crime plagues the city. Bruce Wayne's repressed feelings for his parents' murder return and he takes the mantle of the Bat. Becoming urban legend, menacing myth and a Dark Knight, the Caped Crusader becomes the scourge of the criminal underworld. However, can even the Batman face off against the most terrifying criminal from the 19th century? A man who has come to Gotham from London to wreak havoc on the Bat's turf? A man known only as Jack The Ripper.

Brian Augustyn is an American comic book editor and writer, associated with DC Comics for several of its titles, including The Flash, Justice League and the Impact Comics line of titles. He was awarded the Wizard Fan Award for Favorite Editor in 1994. He is also known for the sequel to this title, Batman: Master of the Future.
Mike Mignola is an American comic book artist, writer and illustrator best known as the creator of the comic book series Hellboy for Dark Horse Comics. He has also worked on covers for several other notable Batman comics, including Batman: A Death in the Family and Dark Knight, Dark City.
P. Craig Russell is an American comic book writer, artist and illustrator who has won several Harvey and Eisner awards for his work. He has worked on Batman: Robin 3000, Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book, Batman: Hothouse, The Sandman: Ramadan and Neil Gaiman's Coraline.
