Description

Turmeric is a perennial herb having a short stem with large simple oblong leaves. Its tubers (rhizomes) are oblong or ovate or pyriform and are often branched. Externally, the rhizomes are yellowish brown, while the internal surface is orange in color.

Uses	In India, it was traditionally used for disorders of the skin, upper respiratory tract, joints, and digestive system. Today, turmeric is promoted as a dietary supplement for a variety of conditions, including arthritis, digestive disorders, respiratory infections, allergies, liver disease, depression, and many others.
Soil Nutrient Requirements	Rich organic soil that is moist and well-drained. It is grown on different types of soils from light black, ashy loam and red soils clay loam. However, it thrives the best in a well-drained sandy or clay loam.
Sowing Method	Planting is also done by forming ridges and furrows. Whole or split mother and finger rhizomes are used for planting and well developed healthy and disease free rhizomes are to be selected. The seed rhizomes are treated with mancozeb 0.3% (3 g/L of water) for 30 minutes, shade dried for 3-4 hours and planted.

Care Instructions

It requires a well-drained soil, frost-free climate and 1000 to 2000mm of rain annually or supplementary irrigation. It thrives best on loamy or alluvial fertile soils and cannot stand waterlogging. Heavy shade will reduce the yield but light shade is beneficial.
