  • Description

The Bhagavad Gita is a poem, an extract from Veda Vyasa’s Mahabharata, which expounds on the foundation of Hindu Dharma and philosophy.

    Summary of the Book

When the Pandavas and the Kauravas were about to clash for the rule of the Kuru Dynasty, Arjuna, one of the Pandavas, began to have doubts about the battle. He did not see the justice in fighting and killing his own cousins. In the moment of his doubt, he turned towards his charioteer for advice. His chariot was guided by none other than Krishna, the Blue God, who chose that moment to expound the Song Divine to Arjuna. He explained that Dharma is the supreme duty of all human beings, and that the inability to fulfil Dharma is why he manifests himself time and again. He explains that Arjuna’s Dharma is to kill the nefarious Kauravas and free the Earth of their avarice. During the course of this song, Krishna preaches about Hindu philosophy and edicts, finally blessing Arjuna by showing him his Universal Form, the Vishwaroopam of Narayana, He Who Rests on Anantha. The Bhagavad Gita is considered one of the greatest works of philosophy. Each of its eighteen chapters touches upon every facet of Vedanta and Hindu Dharma. It is considered to be a universal work on the virtues and duties of mankind.

    About Veda Vyasa

Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa is an Indian mythological figure considered to be a saint and an ascetic. He is credited with organizing the large body of scriptures known as the Vedas and for this feat, he is often named Veda Vyasa. He is also purported to be the author of the Mahabharata and the Puranas.

    • Juan Mascaro was born in Majorca. The beauty of the Island, then unspoilt, and the strength of the living folk tradition, made a deep impression on him as a child. At the age of thirteen he copied a book on occultism, but this proved spiritually misleading. However he found a reading of the Bhagavad Gita highly illuminating, although it was in a poor translation, and this led him to study the elements of Sanskrit. Later he went to Cambridge, where he read modern and oriental languages, Sanskrit, Pali and English. He lectured in Oxford on the Spanish mystics, and then went to Ceylon, where he was Vice-Principal of Parameshvara College at Jaffna, and to the University of Barcelona, where he was Professor of English.

Best version of Gita in English

'Bhagavad Gita - As It Is' truly fulfills what is promised. It is the literal translation of the Gitopadesh in English. Unlike other translations, where author's personal interpretations have slipped into the verse-by-verse accounts, this book is completely free of author's own interpretations. In fact, it explains each verse in detail & gives the reader enough independence to comprehend it.
I am using this book for my MBA project & it is perfect since it is free of any biases.

    Bhagavad Gita As It Is

I know how this translation of Gita is often judged by the extremes with some people calling it an ISKCON propaganda and others appreciating the content. A personal view of mine would be bent towards the latter since I bought the book yesterday and it has been the best 'presented' edition of Gita I have seen.
Now, I didn't buy it from flipkart but from an ISKCON traveling-bus which sold it to me at 150/- .... for a hardbound. Regarding the content, the 'Bhagavad-Gita, As It Is' gives three ve...

    Really wonderful

This book really gave the true understanding of the Bhagavad Gita, the same Lord wanted Arjuna to know the things.
Although I read many other commentaries,no other one has satisfied me to the full extent.

I am very very grateful to Srila Prabhupada for his fabulous work for the society...!! All glories to him.

Dear readers, please choose this book alone to understand Bhagavad Gita..!!! Lord will be pleased with you.

    great book

its a great book giving a clear understanding of gita as it is meant to be. i see some have rated this book below 5 stars. i guess there has been a difference in interpreting it. but no one can doubt the competency of the writer to correctly interpret it. the main stress is on devotional service to krishna as a devotee but there are ways for family men like us also to attain higher levels. i am very much satisfied with it.

Unadulterated plain translation of Lord Krishna's words

Of the hundred's of products purchased from Flipkart so far, this is the first one for which I am penning a review for the first time.

After getting fed up with so many titles of the book by various authors from various sectarian walks of life, finally I have found a book by "Respected" Mascaro (you will feel this after you read the book)that plainly delivers the words of the Lord as he intended and meant to convey without any narrowing sectarian principle or belief.

    Although skeptical at f...
