  • Description
Winner of the Estoril Global Issues Distinguished Book Prize 2013 In 1412, Europe was a miserable backwater ravaged by plague, bad sanitation and incessant war, while the Orient was home to dazzling civilizations. Yet, somehow, the West came to dominate the Rest for most of the next half millennium. In this vital, brilliant book, Niall Ferguson reveals the six 'killer applications' that the Rest lacked: competition, science, property rights, medicine, consumerism and the work ethic. And he asks: do we still have these winning tools? Or is this the end of Western ascendancy? 'Brilliantly written, full of wit and virtuosity, stuffed with memorable lines and gorgeous bits of information. A great read' The Times 'A dazzling history of Western ideas ... epic' Economist 'Vivid and fascinating' Daily Telegraph 'Superb ... brings history alive ... dazzling' Independent 'This is sharp. It feels urgent. Ferguson ... twists his knife with great literary brio' Andrew Marr, Financial Times

    Jumbled Garbage and Imperialist Rant

As almost any other book by Niall Ferguson, this book too serves to perpetuate divisions of society. His book "The Ascent of Money" was thinly veiled attempt to perpetuate class divisions, this one openly attempts to extol Western exploitative practices and propagate ethnocentric prejudice.

Ferguson puts forth 6 factors that led to rise of western "civilization", viz.: competition, science, property rights, consumerism, medicine and work ethic. Even those with a faint knowledge of history an...

Killer Apps of Western Historical Power

Being an Indian, reading Niall Ferguson felt like looking into the mind of a person from another planet. It takes for granted that European (West) Power is all pervasive and all powerful; as long as the largest number of people int he world come from China and India, the numerical advantage itself should be enough to disprove Mr. Ferguson's assumption. Having said that, what irked me most was the realisation that its verging on evil to consider history as a one up man-ship forum for west, eas...
