Summary of the Books
Tao Teh Ching
The Tao of Lao Tzu is a collection of 81 short poems, in which he lays down the foundation of Chinese philosophy. He writes down advice for rulers, practical wisdom for the people and moral values for everyone. He teaches readers about the way of life which has permeated Eastern religion and philosophy, discussing topics such as death, life, eternal return, emptiness, knowledge and humility. It is said that different readers take away different lessons from the Tao, and it is a book that everyone must read, if only to glimpse an entirely peaceful outlook on life.
Hua Hu Chung
In this collection, Lao Tzu writes about his ideas for “converting the barbarians”. He again returns to discuss the Tao - the ineffable universality. He writes about becoming the Tao, learning about oneself through meditation and other practises. This is a definite read for all history and philosophy buffs.
About Lao Tzu
Lao Tzu, known alternatively as Laozi, Lao-tze and Lao-tsu, was a Chinese philosopher and poet. He is best remembered as the founder of philosophical Taoism and he is deified in religious Taoism and traditional Chinese religions. His actual existence is a matter of much speculation, shrouded by myths and legends. Supposedly, Lao Tzu's existence is either dated to around the 6th century BC or the 5th or 4th centuries BC, during the Warring States period.
