About B. K. S. Iyengar
Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar is an author and the founder of the Iyengar style of yoga. He has authored numerous texts on this subject. Some of these titles are Yog Dwara Swastha Jeevan, Light on Pranayama, Yoga Dipika, and Yoga for a World Out of Balance. He was born to a poor Iyengar family. In his youth, Iyengar was heavily influenced by his brother-in-law, who was a yogi. He credits this as the turning point in his life. Iyengar is credited with introducing yoga to the West and he started teaching it at the age of 18. He has been a teacher and practitioner of yoga for over 75 years. The Queen of Belgium and Yehudi Menuhin are some of his famous disciples. In 1991, he was presented with the Padma Shri and in 2002, the Padma Bhushan. In 2004, Time magazine named him as one of the 100 most influential people. He married in 1934, and he has six children with his wife Ramamani.
