Summary of the Book

Cosmos is based on Carl Sagan’s famous television series by the same name. This edition has hundreds of illustrations, most of which were never published before. Told with Sagan’s unique and incredible ability to make scientific ideas both understandable and exciting, Cosmos is about science in its comprehensive human context, and how science and civilization grew up together. The book fascinatingly recounts those spacecraft missions that were aimed at discovering nearby planets, and talks about the human brain, the research in the ancient Library of Alexandria, Egyptian hieroglyphs, the origin of life, the death of the Sun, the evolution of galaxies and the origins of matter, and other suns and worlds. Sagan retraces cosmic evolution that has occurred over billions of years and how it has transformed matter into life and consciousness, enabling the cosmos to know and wonder about itself. He also talks about the relentless search of man for life elsewhere in the space and how we might establish communication with the beings of other worlds. Sagan looks at our planet from an extra-terrestrial vantage point and sees a blue jewel-like world that he calls 'the pale blue dot', inhabited by a life-form that is just starting to discover the purpose of its own existence and aims to venture out into space.

About Carl Sagan

Carl Sagan is unarguably one of the greatest ambassadors of humanity known for their remarkable contributions towards science. Sagan is perhaps better known for creating a perspective for our species beyond all boundaries of geography, politics and our own place in this universe.
