The Count of Monte Cristo is a classic novel of revenge by Alexandre Dumas.

Summary of the Book

Edmond Dantès had everything: the woman of his dreams, a lot of money, and the promotion he has always wanted. Yet, the jealousy of three men and the weakness of another turns his dream into a nightmare. Labelled a a Bonapartist traitor, Dantès is cast into a prison after an unfair trial. He is condemned to life without any chance of freedom. The lonely Château d'If seems like it will be his grave. As the years pass, Dantès slowly turns mad. One day, his fate changes when he hears a man trying to tunnel his way out. This man is the Abbe Faria, and he befriends Dantès. Faria teaches Dantès much about the world, and reveals that Dantès was thrown in prison as the result of a plot. Faria unexpectedly dies, and Dantès uses his body bag to escape. He finds a treasure Faria had told him about, and he decides to use it for one purpose: revenge. Edmond Dantèsdisappears in the aftermath, and a new man walks ahead, with his goal plain before his eyes. He is the Count of Monte Cristo, and he lives only to exact revenge on the men who ruined Dantès’ life.

About Alexandre Dumas

Alexandre Dumas, père, was a French writer. He is best remembered for his D’Artagnan Romances, collected in The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After and The Vicomte de Bragelonne: Ten Years Later.

The Count of Monte Cristo was adapted into several films, most notably in 2002 starring Jim Caviezel, Guy Pearce and Richard Harris. It was also masterfully adapted into a Telugu movie entitled Veta starring Chiranjeevi.
