    Excellent work on colonial and postcolonial Maratha history

    Deshpande's prodigious research does not come in the way of writing a very readable and absorbing account of the evolution of Maratha identity and more interestingly, historiagraphy. Deshpande looks at bakhars, the precolonial tradition of Maratha prose historical narratives and in turn examines how the bakhars themselves were first dismissed by nationalists steeped in the positivist framework of historiography. The bakhars however, very interesting sites, despite being 'occasionally gossipy'...
