    Summary of the Book

    Crime and Punishment, by Dostoyevsky, is set in the cold and drab slums of pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg. Fyodor Dostoyevsky delves into the theme of redemption through grief with the help of a brilliant young character, Raskolnikov, and the crime he commits. He plans the flawless murder of a detestable pawnbroker, who is loathed by everyone. The novel is imbued with philosophical, religious and social observations and insights. After the crime he had intended to happen, Raskolnikov lives in acute sorrow and guilt. The story takes the readers to the darkest nooks of a criminal mind, baring the soul of a man caught between the eternal clash of good and evil.

    About Fyodor Dostoyevsky

    Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky was a famous Russian novelist, short story writer, philosopher, essayist and journalist. His works are widely famous as intense explorations of human psychology in the context of extreme conditions of human misery. Some of his most notable works are The Idiot, The Brothers Karamazov, Notes from Underground, The Gambler, and The House of the Dead.

    • Fyodor Dostoevsky was born in Moscow on 11th November 1821. He had six siblings and his mother died in 1837 and his father in 1839. He graduated from the St Petersburg Academy of Military Engineering in 1846 but decided to change careers and become a writer. His first book, Poor Folk, did very well but on 23rd April 1849 he was arrested for subversion and sentenced to death. After a mock-execution his sentence was commuted to hard labour in Siberia where he developed epilepsy.He was released in 1854. His 1860 book, The House of the Dead was based on these experiences. In 1857 he married Maria Dmitrievna Isaeva. After his release he adopted more conservative and traditional values and rejected his previous socialist position. In the following years he spent a lot of time abroad, struggled with an addiction to gambling and fell deeply in debt. His wife died in 1864 and he married Anna Grigoryeva Snitkina. In the following years he published his most enduring and successful books, includingCrime and Punishment (1865). He died on 9th February 1881.

    Crime and Punishment

    I love Russian books for the length and reading them non stop on a rainy weekend is nothing short of heavenly bliss! Crime and Punishment is one of the best books that I've read. Excellent narration, realistic situations and the characters come alive to such an extent that you feel you are part of the story. You feel that its all happening to you and not to Raskolnikov as you read the book. I'm now buying the whole works of Dostoevsky.. one by one

    If I call it an excellent book, it would be just a truism as reviews of the Coulson's version of C&P can be found anywhere. I would say it arrived much earlier than the expected delivery date. I ordered this book rejecting the cheaper ones, because I had read this book already, and being a bibliophile, I wanted to order a superior quality book for the collection. Go for it. Classics forever!

    Cheap Price, Great Quality

    The book is "a lot" cheaper than second hand prices at various book stores across Mumbai. Page quality is quite good, and binding quality also, I have seen worse binding than this one from a lot of good publishers.
    You get a free bookmark with all books you order (I am not sure the generosity is shown by Flipkart or WS Retail, but we get a free book mark +1).
    All in all, great book, good quality, amazing delivery speed.

    Worth every penny

    It's a translation done by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. It's the best translation so far. Everyman classic one is also the translation of same but its somewhat costly.

    Masterpiece

    You 'll find only few novels like this in the world literature. Awesome is not the appropriate word to explain the feelings that it gives. You find yourself moved by this novel once you finished the book.

    Crime And Punishment - Worth reading

    What can I say about the book and author, which is not yet spoken about. Author is legend and book is a masterpiece. The details of emotions which the the protagonist goes is explained beautifully and the book is a MUST BUY. (Keep a dictionary on the side as some words need to be referred )

    Bad Book Quality

    The Rating here is not for the content of this fabulous novel but it's appearance. The book seems like a roadside mass media paper back which does not justify it's price. It's a fake version of the vintage classics which could be easily seen from its low quality paper and horrible ink used.
    My advise would be look for a different seller who does not cheat. Other than that Dostoevsky brilliantly portrays the thought process of a murderer who is not able to cope with the burden of the crime he ...
