The stories of this book present a variety of characters. There is Markham in When Darkness Falls, who is war veteran. Due to an accident, he has to face a kind of outcast and live a lonely life. There is a happy widow Susanna in Susanna’s Seven Husbands who loves each of her seven husbands to death. There is a reckless rake, Kundan Lal, who is famous among women. Somewhere in these stories there is also a sad woman who comes back after her death to find her husband has moved on with another love.

As Bond puts himself, these stories “are about how the process of growing up has made us what we are today.” Most of the stories in this book were written a few months before the publication but several of them are set in the period of Bond’s childhood and adulthood. They have a semi-autobiographical touch and talk about the times when Bond lived in Dehra Dun with his grandmother. The stories set in Dehra Dun of the mid nineteenth century portray certain eccentric young lives. And Living Without Money is one of the stories that was written when Bond was freelancing.

Ruskin Bond is a famous Indian writer of children’s fiction who has been honored with Padma Shri for his contributions to literature.

Born on 19th May 1934, Ruskin Bond is an Indian children’s fiction writer of British descent. After the sudden demise of his father, he started living with his grandmother in Dehradun since the age of ten. He completed his early education from Bishop Cotton School in Shimla where he won various writing competitions. Though he was raised by his mother, his love for books was initiated by his father. His father kept him surrounded with books and made him write small descriptions of nature. He also went on hiking in the hills with his father. Ruskin Bond has been honored with numerous awards for his contributions to children’s literature. These include the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Padma Shri.
