  • Description

One of the best storytellers of contemporary India' "Tribune Momentous things happen elsewhere, in the big cities of Nehru's India. In dull and dusty Pipalnagar, each day is like another, and -there is not exactly despair, but resignation'. Even the dreams here are small: if he ever makes it to Delhi, Deep Chand, the barber, will open a more up-to-date salon where he might, perhaps, give the Prime Minister a haircut; Pitamber will trade his cycle-rickshaw for the less demanding scooter-rickshaw; Aziz will be happy with a junk-shop in Chandni Chowk. None, of course, will make that journey to Delhi. Adrift among them, the narrator, Arun, a struggling writer of detective novels in Urdu, waits for inspiration to write a blockbuster. One day he will pack his meagre belongings and take the express train out of Pipalnagar. Meanwhile, he seeks reassurance in love, and finds it in unusual places: with the young prostitute Kamla, wise beyond her years; and the orphan Suraj, homeless and an epileptic, yet surprisingly optimistic about the future. Few authors write with greater sensitivity and skill about little India than Ruskin Bond. Delhi Is Not Far is a memorable story about small lives, with all the hallmarks of classic Ruskin Bond prose: nostalgia, charm, underplayed humour and quiet wisdom.

    Simplicity can convey a lot

This is a novel without a plot, devoid of thrills, having no beginning and end but still keeps you engrossed. That's the charm of Ruskin Bond's unique style of story telling. The novella describes the life in a small town through a few characters who dream to be in Delhi, a symbol of a large city, to lead a better life style. The intimacy and comaraderie exhibited by the chatacters in the book can be actually felt by the reader. Written in first person the novel seems to be quite autobiograph...

    Superb novella

So far I had read only story books of Mr. Bond. This was his first novella for me. I am a big fan of Mr. Bond and this novella just made me a bigger fan of him. It is a story of hope even in very tough times and advises you to be hopeful in life always. Grab a copy. It is a gem. And as always in case of Mr. Bond books, the title made an instant impact on me.

    Fascinating read

After reading yet another Ruskin Bond novel , i can't think what a man must feel about the world to write something like this . A true novel based on a handful of simple yet high thinking lives and describing the nature which surrounds India is a great experience . Even it moved me , a mere 22 year old in 2014 , a new genY lad and once again it is certain that Bond is one of my most favourite authors along side the great Satyajit Ray and a few others

    Special

A book full of feelings and vivid descriptions. The way Ruskin Bond describes a scene or a situation is commendable. A good book to read.
    Precisely, a classic novel.

    Good

I had read a lot of writings of Ruskin Bond in a popular monthly English Children magazine. Compared to them, these stories are not that good. Only very average.

But, still very nice to read, if you want to feel like a child again. Good read.
