The 1857 mutiny was tried to continue by the British as Sepoy Mutiny. But in fact it was not only a sepoy mutiny but also took the form of a mass mutiny with the sepoys. This was the first outburst of smoldering indignation against British rule in India. A large section of the larger Hindu society also joined the Muslims in this rebellion. But the Hindus of Bengal were an exception. They sided with the English.Instead of a chain of subjugation, they began to call the British rule a special blessing and grace of God.
One hundred years of British rule had created various reasons for popular protests and sepoy mutiny. The biggest reason for the mutiny of the sepoys was the rumor about the use of cow-pork fat in Kartuz. And this cartridge had to be torn with the teeth. As a result, it was natural that all the sepoys, regardless of whether they were Muslim or Hindu, were angry. There was unrest among them. On January 2, 1857, the manifestation of this unrest started from Dumdum. In February, a soldier named Mangal Pandey opened fire on an English sergeant major at Barrackpore cantonment, 16 miles from Calcutta.
Then the fire of revolt broke out in the largest cantonment at Meerut. Rebel revolutionary soldiers started marching towards Delhi. There was Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor without power. The same voice was heard from all over the country, 'Delhi Chalo'.
