Set in the city of Tokyo, The Devotion Of Suspect X is a Japanese thriller novel, with the plot and the characters shrouded in an aura of mystery and crime.

    Summary Of The Book

The Devotion Of Suspect X (known as Yogisha X No Kenshin in Japanese) is a mystery novel. It narrates the story of Yasuko Hanaoka, a single mother who lives in Tokyo. The story mainly revolves around the battle of wits between a mathematician and a physicist.

Yasuko Hanaoka works in a Bento shop, and her neighbor, Tetsuya Ishigami, a genius mathematician, falls in love with her.

Shinji Togashi, her ex-husband, enters her life again and tries to destroy everything that she has built up. In a fit of rage and in self defense, she murders him. Cornered and helpless, she is then helped by the brilliant Ishigami, who devises a plan to cover up the murder.

Shunpei Kusanagi, a detective with the Tokyo Police, is given the task of decoding the mysterious events of that fateful day, but he is left stumped by the puzzling circumstances that he has been called upon to investigate.

Kusanagi often seeks the help of his friend, a genius physicist named Manabu Yukawa, in solving seemingly impossible cases. But this time, Yukawa secretly decides to take matters into his own hands to help his old friend Ishigami, who is involved in the mysterious case.

Kusanagi seems to have hit a dead end in solving this puzzling case, but whether the genius of Yukawa succeeds is something that remains to be seen.

The Devotion of Suspect X was highly acclaimed and won Higashino many coveted awards including the 134th Naoki Prize and the 6th Honkaku Mystery Grand Prize. It was also awarded the number one status by the 2006 editions of Kono Mystery ga Sugoi! and Honkaku Mystery Best 10, two mystery fiction guidebooks published annually in Japan. In the year 2008, it was made into a Japanese film directed by Hiroshi Nishitani. A Korean film adaptation is also in the pipeline as of May 2012.

A BRILLIANT SOFT BOILED DETECTIVE THRILLER

    THE DEVOTION OF SUSPECT X
    BOOK REVIEW
    By
    VIKRAM KARVE

The Devotion of Suspect X is a brilliant novel – it has terrific suspense which produces first-rate Page Turning Quality, unity of effect which engages the reader and makes it engrossing and unputdownable, a remarkable ending which stuns you and a meaty plot with analytical substance which imparts a sense of value.

This is not a hard boiled detective thriller nor is it a whodunit murder mystery. In fact, the author describes the murder ...

A delicately crafted piece of Japanese art

This book is a class apart all other thrillers in the market and tells you who the perpetrator is in the initial pages of the book and yet compels you to continue turning its pages until the very end.
The story is extremely logical and makes you appreciate the circumspection of its Author.
Even though the story was written originally in Japanese, the English translation works well with its perspicuous style.

    Very nice...

The start was little irritating for me as all characters and places are named in Japanese. Yes, I knew that it was from a Japanese writer, but it never occurred to me that names will be Japanese.
However, story starts a little slow for 3-4 pages but gets very aggressive and fast.
Nicely written and well formed characters.
Book quality is good I will say, not great like Inferno or Sweet Tooth but for price, justified.
Last pages makes you very excited. Same happened to me with Millenium series...

    the best climax ever

Though I started with the author's second book "Salvation of a Saint", which is another engrossing and brilliant thriller. This series is best after the millenium and bourne series. The book moves in a slow fashion almost till the end and then, the twist comes which is the best climax ever. These 2 books need to be in the personal collection.

    A grand treat!

This is one of the best mystery novels (to have come out of Japan) I had read this year. It knocked me out of my senses for its razor-sharp suspense in the story.

The uniqueness of the story is that you get to know who the murderer is right at the start of the novel, but the fact that the maths teacher, Ishigami (Suspect X) is so blind in his sympathetic devotion for the woman who murders that he is ready to go great lengths and do just about anything to save the woman he loves and her daugh...

'A Must Read; is understatement. Please don't miss it.

Just after I was through with this fiction thriller (this afternoon), it immediately became my favourite novel. I've been fortunate to read some finest stuff so far but story telling was never so good like this. Characters will stay with me for some time, I guess. The author has used some wonderful sentences & examples to connect the dots. Not to forget, by far - it's the best title I've seen for any novel. Highly recommended. Read & know for yourself!

    Superb plot

Very nicely written. At some places you might feel it little draggy but over all its worth the time. Must have if you like thrillers.

It's a story of a Maths teacher, his friend who is a physics scientist and a detective. The way in which maths teacher creates misleading events and evidences is very nicely captured.
