    Description

The Difficulty Of Being Good: On The Subtle Art Of Dharma examines moral dilemmas of current times and relates them to the dilemmas faced by the characters in the great epic Mahabharata.

    Summary Of The Book

The Mahabharata is a sweeping epic that chronicles different facets of human life, emotional and ethical conflicts. It has a huge number of characters and none of them are perfect. The negative characters have positive attributes too, and the heroes also have flaws. In fact, they're all essentially human.

So it is not difficult for the author to study today’s moral questions in the context of the characters in the epic. Dharma, the moral code of behavior, has generally remained unchanged since those ancient times. In The Difficulty Of Being Good: On The Subtle Art Of Dharma, the author analyzes major characters like Duryodhana, Karna, Bhishma, Yudhishthira and Arjuna.

He looks at the character and behavior of these people in difficult situations, and their individual reactions He looks at Karna's status anxiety and Duryodhana's envy. He critically examines the methods used by both sides to win the war.

He also brings in current parallels to some of the situations and characters in the epic. For instance, he sees Duryodhana’s envy reflected in the Ambani brothers feud. He uses Karna’s anxiety over his status to debate the issue of reservation in modern India. The book analyzes the very basic question of why should a person be good, the motivations for living life according to a moral or ethical code. It also examines the ambiguities in the choices made by characters when faced with a dilemma, the hazy line that divides the good and the bad.

The Mahabharata focuses a lot on Dharma and whenever there is a transgression of an ethical code, the story pauses and the incident is thoroughly analyzed by various characters.

    Refreshing Read

Unlike many biased and simplistic renditions of the Mahabharata, the Difficulty of Being Good is a refreshing examination of the moral and ethical issues dealt with in the epic with commendable poise. This book, as the author says, is an account of his quest for understanding “dharma” through one of the greatest literary works known to mankind – the Mahabharata.

Though the chapter on envy stands out as superficial and even childish at a point, the rest of the book is engaging and thought pr...

Full of irrational and dogmatic interpretations !

Recently I read a book called " The difficulty of being good" by Gurucharan Das'......No doubt it is great attempt to offer new vistas to reader. His positive and steady tone has added much value to the book than his style and content.

But I felt, in many places his funny comparisons and interpretations of Mahabharath certainly will spoil an innocent reader. I found there are very serious irrational and dogmatic analyses. He says Yudhishtara with capitalist mind set and Dhuryodhana with com...

Difficulty of Being Good: Subtle Art of Dharma

The book is written in the fashion of a treatise, researched, and with relevant references, to improve the reading experience. It is not a start-to-end un-put-down-able book. It takes a while for the finer aspects and details to sink in. So do not try to breeze thru trying to cull information, as bullet-points of learning. This is not a book meant for the Blackberry and Galaxy Tab generation, whose knowledge of theology, and adherence to customs and traditions, is as superficial as dew on bla...

    Bad book

After a certain time, it becomes painful rhetoric. An article would have been sufficient. The author stretches and drags it into a book.

I threw it away after reading 30 odd pages.

    Nothing new. Nothing worthy.

    Disappointing

Highly disappointed with the book / author.

Author almost justifies / condones all the bad behavior of Duryodhana and Kaurav.
And is highly critical of Pandav.
    Comes up as biased opinion.

A confused, rather a book with no direction

I found the book rather uninteresting. Had to give it up after the first few pages. I agree that the description of the incidents of the Mahabharata and its characters were very detailed and true to life, they were the only upside in the book. I was rather disappointed with the part that relates the incidents to that of the modern world. The author tries to impress us with his Gyan about current affairs and quite forcefully tries to relate it to the central theme of the book. There is no stor...
