Phoolbasan Yadav is the pioneer of Self-Help Groups in India, and it is considered her most significant contribution to Indian society and the social justice system. But that does not mean that her other contributions are any less important. She has worked relentlessly for education, healthcare, economic upliftment, women’s empowerment and what not. Something that strikes me about her life is that she has been a relentless crusader against social evil and disparity right from her childhood. Her story is not only an inspiration for women or the downtrodden people all around the world but also for everyone in general because it is a live example of how one can stand tall against all the odds and face challenges boldly. At a very young age, she saw the harsh side of life and how life is not comfortable for everyone. She became aware of the limited resources available or the total lack of certain opportunities for the likes of her. She realised that people born in her condition find it almost impossible to fulfill most of their dreams. But instead of giving up and compromising with her situations, she decided to fight. She decided to climb up in life, no matter what comes. She decided to fight against all the odds, and that made all the difference. Throughout her life, we see that she has never compromised with adverse situations. This has turned her into an example to be followed; a story to be told.
