  • Description
The second book in the Easy Money trilogy discusses how the global financial system evolved in the aftermath of the First World War and how that finally led to the dot-com crash in the United States, in the early 2000s. It gives an overview of how in the aftermath of the First World War, Europe was in major trouble. The book also analyzes how the United Kingdom of Great Britain, which was once the premier nation of the world, lost out to its former colony, the United States of America. The dominance of the United States led to its currency, the dollar, becoming the international reserve currency. This led to the United States having an exorbitant privilege which it still continues to have. Over the years, this exorbitant privilege has led to many financial crises in different parts of the world. It has also been responsible for the current financial crisis as well. The book concludes with the wisdom of the legendary investor Warren Buffett, who was deemed to be a failure, during the heydays of the dot-com bubble, when his investment company Berkshire Hathaway could not generate the stupendous returns that dot-com stocks had been generating. Nevertheless, in the end, it was Buffett who had the last laugh. As he wrote to his shareholders: "But a pin lies in wait for every bubble." The lessons of the dot-com bubble bursting were never really learnt, and soon the same mistakes would be made again.

Perfect mix of academic and fun reading

I've read several books on the same subject earlier and yet I find it interesting to continue reading.

The good things: past 500 years well-covered, every concept described in detail, stories written lucidly, and detailed references given at the same page for scholarly reading.

The not-so good things: Europe-centered, so the Indian side of the story is wanting; concepts explained in such detail that scholars may find it slow in some places.

Recommendation: worth a buy because two more of...

    Time Value of Money!

Easy Money happens to be one of those few books that come once in a while and introduces concepts, in a story like fashion, for an erudite as well as a casual reader. What I liked about this book, by author Vivek Kaul, is how he has transformed a subject from the realms of economics to a great lucid read. Read it, if you want to understand how money evolved over centuries and more importantly read it for a précis of world history that it offers in its journey. Already waiting for Part 2 and 3...

A gateway to the world of economics

I happened to buy this book in a book fare, got easily lured by just reading the cover of it. Firstly a huge cry out to the author Vivek Kaul, applause for his breathtaking research (each page has some minimum 10 sources).
The book starts with an interesting facts about the history of barter, and then usage of coins and then now the practice of paper notes. The later half of the book is purely devoted to the evolution of banking system in US and UK, which gives you an idea of rise of their c...

    well explained

Despite being a management graduate, i often could not get answers for questions like "why do we need banks..why cant we have moneylenders" or "how is currency value decided" or "why is everyone crazy for gold", etc. Well thanks to Vivek, now i know. I am very grateful to vivek for stirring up in me, the desire to read further on money. This will be my first book in a long line of such books to be read :)

Must read for getting a sense on how money in this world works!

The best thing about Easy Money is it explains right from the start how the current concept of money had evolved and what drives it in the real world. That too in a language a person, even without any knowledge of the financial world, can understand! I suggest it as a must read for anyone who wants to understand how money works in an easy to understand format.

This is a great book and I believe it is a must read for all. I picked it up because a friend recommended it and I loved it so much that I have been recommending to everyone who is interested in economics.
It makes for a very interesting read because it is simple and easy to understand and deals with such difficult topics in the most compelling narrative. The book is full of amusing anecdotes and is a storehouse of information.

Easy Money:Very informative and great read.Worth reading for its well researched content

A very interesting account of evolution of money from 18th century till world war I. It gives a deep insight about how easy money has become complex and thus liable for current complex financial equations. A fascinating detailed analysis of different forms of money. Author has made a complicated subject simple to understand. It is not about investing money ,it is all about understanding money.
