He attended Balliol College, Oxford, where he earned his B.A. honours in 1834 and his M.A. in 1837. Soon after, he was appointed as a Petrean fellow of Exeter College, Oxford, where he lectured on Hebrew and Syriac. Morris had a particular interest in Eastern and patristic theology. During his time at Oxford, Morris authored several works, including an "Essay towards the Conversion of Learned and Philosophical Hindus" in 1843, a poem titled "Nature: a Parable" in 1842, and translations such as "Select Homilies from St. Ephraem" from the Syriac in 1846 and John Chrysostom's "Homilies on the Romans" in 1841 for the Library of the Fathers. Following his conversion, he contributed to various Catholic periodicals such as the Dublin Review, The Lamp, and the Irish Monthly. Additionally, he wrote an essay called "Eucharist on Calvary," which explored the first Mass and the Passion.
