  • Description

Published in 1958 and soon becoming an international phenomenon, Exodus by Leon Uris vividly portrays the birth of a new nation, the state of Israel, amidst heartfelt triumph and a passionate struggle for power.

    Summary Of The Book

Exodus, named after the infamous immigration ship of the same name, is the story of the millions of surviving Jews, post WWII, struggling to get their lives in order as they fight for their homeland, amidst widespread political chaos and tumult.

Through the lives of protagonists Ari Ben Canaan, an Israeli freedom fighter, and an American nurse Kitty Fremont, Uris highlights the passionate endeavour of many of those individuals, who with all their might, attempted to bring about the much needed stability in a war-torn society.

Based on historical events of the 1940s, Exodus throws light on the determination of the Jews in claiming their own land, and ultimately providing to the world a sympathetic understanding of Israel.

Known for its very sharp and precise way of writing along with distinctive descriptions, Exodus became an international bestseller, even surpassing the American classic Gone With The Wind and was translated into more than 50 languages.

Though Uris did not win any awards or recognition for Exodus, the widespread popularity of the novel not only made him a well-known figure in the genre of historical fiction, but also led to the making of Exodus, the movie, in 1960, by Otto Preminger, the film rights of which he sold in advance. The novel was also turned into a Broadway musical in 1971.

    About Leon Uris

Leon Uris was an American novelist, well known in the genre of historical fiction, especially known for his extensive research behind his writing.

His earlier novels include Battle Cry and The Angry Hills, which he wrote before the best-selling Exodus. His subsequent titles are Mila 18, Armageddon: A Novel of Berlin, Trinity, Redemption, and The Haj.

Uris is known for his descriptive yet matter-of-fact writing style, very much to the point and clear, but at the same time poignant enough to arouse emotions in the reader.

His works are mainly based on his own experiences in the US Marine Corps as well as a correspondent during the war.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1924 to Jewish-American parents, Leon Uris developed an interest in writing at a very young age, but failed high school English not once, but three times. On account of the war, he could not complete his education but instead enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 17.

    A Superb Novel

Perhaps the best novel written about the genesis of Zionism and subsequent birth of Israel.
The greatest treasure of the book is the amount of research that has gone into its making. The book is a seamless combination of fiction with historical events, meticulously chronicling the inhuman treatment and persecution the Jews were subjected to in Europe throughout the centuries, the Holocaust by the Nazis, the immigration of the oppressed peoples to Palestine, their struggles with the British an...

    Terrific

This is the first time I am reviewing a book. This book made me review it. It is the perfect book which gives a detailed history about the birth of Israel as a country, the suffering of Jews and 1948 Palestinian war. There are places where it feels like it's loosing its grip by giving too much information about the characters background. But those information about the characters gives us a insight on the struggles of world war 2 and the struggles of Jews and their determination to build the...

    Magnificent Work by the Author!!

The 'Exodus' was my first Leon Uris' book and definately won't be my last! The book is an unfolding story that is full of fact, drama, romance, action, religion and skillfully inter-woven fiction. The book is an amazing work of literature. The story is so vivid, that one feels as though they themselves are present at the time of the events and are part of the action. The way in which the book is written make you feel as though you are very close to the characters and you begin to feel that th...

    Worthy purchase

The book is awesome, no mentions needed. Packing by flipkart was equally awesome. The book came in excellent condition. For those who wanna know about the book, they may read its synopsis/overview at any appropriate place. For others, the pricing here is correct. The book is printed in the USA. 600 pages, with smaller than normal but easily readable text. At the begining its stated : "NOT ONE WORD HAS BEEN OMITTED."

    Nice book in small print

'Exodus' is enjoyable, informative, with its obvious bias. At places it bundles disproportionately large information to somewhat lessen the grip of the strory. Unfortunately, the print is too small for comfortable reading.

    All time favorite

The beauty of this book for me will remain in the fact that I was unable to read any book after this for a considerable period of time. Crisp, straight and beautiful are the three words that define the writing in the book. A definite read! :)
