Fault Lines: How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten The World Economy is written by a professor and a former IMF Chief Economist. This book not only examines the causes of the global financial crisis of 2008, it also suggests some practical measures to prevent such a thing from happening again.

    Summary Of The Book

Just like geological fault lines, cracks in the financial landscape run deep and mostly unseen. Fault Lines: How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten The World Economy says that if these weaknesses are not fixed, it could result in further quakes in the financial world that could be as bad as what happened in 2008.

The author of this book made himself unpopular by predicting a serious financial crisis at a Federal Reserve celebratory function in 2005. He was one of the minority who spotted the trouble that lay ahead, and in a short time, he was proved right.

This book is one of the many that goes into the causes and effects of the current crisis. But, it doesn't limit itself to pointing fingers at the usual suspects. The author says that an analysis of this crisis should go beyond blaming greedy bankers and individual investors.

He says that in a way, the action of all parties concerned was actually a logical response to the prevailing situation and the available options. He says that the trouble had been brewing for long, with the discrepancy in the earning power of the educated and the unqualified, in the anxiety over job security, and concerns about health insurance.

He also points out that the government opted for some quick-fix measures like allowing banks to provide credit to people with doubtful ability to pay back the loans, and promises of bailouts that encouraged some to take disproportionate risks.

Fault Lines: How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten The World Economy identifies and analyzes the problems created by short-sighted policies and greed. It then suggests some tough measures to ensure that such a crisis does not occur again.

    The 2007 Crisis examined

The book is a must read for everyone and anyone in business, as it analyses rational responses and systemic flaws, and stays away form a witch hunt. It gives you a good understanding of international business, as well as the underlying forces and takes your mind to the big picture, teaching you to look at any situation from afar.

It is common to blame the big businesses for any and every financial crisis that takes place; whenever you go through one, the blame always goes to the big corpo...

    Objective Analysis of World Economy

I purchased this book almost close to a time when Raghuram Rajan has become the RBI governor. His research brings out certain key aspects:

    (1) US economy behaved like a developing country (where sops and subsidies tend to take more importance) prior to 2007 in promising a house guarantee to everyone even when many of the people had sub-prime credit rating (The author brings out nice examples like a 70 year old woman being given housing loan in US even when her Income field was "Nil" in the a...

Masterly chapter on India by Mr Rajan

I bought ' Fault Lines: How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten the World Economy' upon my daughter's request (she is a post graduate student of Economics), but I too was interested in getting an idea of the book, because of the author's star reputation.

I greatly valued the chapter on India (as far as I can recall, it's called India: what lies ahead) as one of the best summing up of the socio economic situation of India at present. I found it illuminating and quite brilliant. Many of the things...

Great Book, Definitely Worth Buying for every market enthusiast

I have been follwing Raghuram Rajan for quite some time now. His papers, speeches, books inspire and tell so much about market and economy. Being one of the handful economists in the world to predict the 2008 economic slow down - This book talks a lot about it.

A must read for every person who knows about market, has interest in economy and is curious to understand the reasons behind the fallout. Even if you are not a finance graduate, this book still gives a lot of room and flexibility to ...

A good exposition of global economics today

There are many books which attempt to explain how the world got into its current economic mess. This is one of the better ones, more so as it touches on all aspects including soft issues which most economists do not pay attention to.
It is not very easy reading, but if you make an effort you will be rewarded. The last chapter about India is very perceptive.

    Flawless Diagnosis

Rajan provides a flawless diagnosis of the financial crisis that shook the American economy and the contagion that rocked the world. Unlike many analysts who indulge only in a theoretical analyses, he suggests a strategy to prevent such a crisis in the future. His prescription appears plausible, "doable". Most of the book relates to the USA. However, there seem to be very little of his prescription happening on the ground. Even the universal health insurance seems to be foundering.

The best man has arrived (with his book)

Its like a cinema hero entering into the scene and corrects every mess around. But this time its the real hero - Raghuram Rajan at its best to protect the ailing economy with his foresightedness, experience and superb research right from page 1. This book is a warning bell for those who think the bad days for the world economy is over - if you want to be the next real life hero - read on to find out what lies beneath (the economy off course). Simply awesome book from a brilliant man.

The best book on the global crisis

This is by far the best book on global financial crisis I have read – including the ones written by Nobel laureates such as Stiglitz and Krugman. The book is comprehensive in coverage and masterful in its treatment of various issues that bedevil economic policy and finance globally. Dr Rajan has handled a multitude of themes and sub-themes in the book, each logically woven with the other, effortlessly gliding the reader from one topic to another.
