It is a pseudonym of the Stratemeyer Syndicate, founded by Edwin Stratemeyer. The Chester K. Steele books are mysteries intended for an older audience than the children's books like the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew. The novel follows the story of Harry Bartlett and Gerry Poland, two friendly rivals for the hand of Viola Carwell. Harry's family got the best of Viola's father, the Honorable Horace Harwell, in a business deal. Viola shows no favoritism, but her father is determined to prevent her from marrying Harry. One day, Harry is found dead on the golf course, apparently having fallen from a cliff. Gerry is the prime suspect, as he was the last person seen with Harry before his death. However, Gerry insists that he is innocent, and he sets out to clear his name and find the real killer. Gerry's investigation leads him to uncover a web of deceit and betrayal. He discovers that Harry was involved in a number of shady business deals, and that he had made a number of enemies. Gerry also learns that Viola's father is not the man he seems to be. In the end, Gerry solves the mystery and brings the killer to justice. He also wins the heart of Viola, who realizes that he is the man she wants to marry.
