General Fiction Books, Classic Books
The fond memories of my father reading me a Classic book during bedtime are something which I would cherish all my life. Thanks to those night-reading sessions, I have developed a taste for general fiction books. Like they say, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”, the genre is never the criterion for me to choose a book.
There is no doubt that reading widens your horizon, however, with endless books getting published on a daily basis, how would you choose which general fiction to pick up for your next reading. Choosing a Classic book is entirely an acquired taste. You either like Classic books, thanks to their flowery language and portrayal of characters, or you don’t.
So how do you choose a book? Is there a rule to choose the type of general fiction book you want to read? Is it mandatory to read Classic book, Classic novels and Classic literature before you move onto fiction? The answer is a big no! Like Betty Rosenberg said, “Never apologize for your reading taste”. You are free to read what you like.
Let us look at some of the points that can help you find the right book.
Pace
The pace of a book is defined by the intensity of the plot. In other words, is it a page-turner that keeps you at the edge of your seat or is it a slow and sedated story that might take a month or two to finish? Depending on how you would like to have your story paced, choosing the right type of general fiction book would be a breeze. However, the pace of some books differs based on the author’s perspective of story weaving.
Characterization
The manner in which characters are introduced and presented in a book goes a long way in establishing the book’s shelf life. The better the characterization, the better the sales, the larger the reading audience and fan following.
Storyline
Would you recommend a movie with a weak storyline? No, right? Similarly, a book with a weak storyline would fail to take off and interest the readers. A good storyline should speak of the orientation of the plot, should be character-driven and should keep the reader interested. Some of the best Classic novels such as Treasure Island, Journey to the Center of the Earth and more have been made into movies too. In fact, many popular movie series have been inspired by books. The famous ones being Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and more.
Reading is a wonderful journey that should be enjoyed from a very young age. Children should be encouraged to read a number of classic books as well as general fiction books. With time, they themselves would be able to judge what genre they like and would take it ahead from there.
