About The Book: The book chronicles Sir Richard Meade's extensive service spanning forty-three years as a soldier, political officer, and administrator. During his dedicated engagement in his assigned tasks, in 1873, Meade was appointed by Lord Northbrook as the President of a Commission responsible for investigating severe allegations of mismanagement against Malhar Rao, the Gaekwar of Baroda. This ruler held the highest position among the Maratha ruling chiefs, both in rank and influence. Meade also played a role in the trial of the Chief in 1875, which revolved around accusations of an attempted poisoning of Colonel Phayre, the British Resident. Throughout this critical period, Meade served as a competent representative of the British Government for a span of five years. About The Author: Thomas Henry Thornton (1832 - 1913) served as an English Indian Civil Servant, judge, and author known for his notable biographies set during the British Raj. Joining the Indian Civil Service in 1855, Thornton was among the first officers selected through competitive examinations during the waning years of the East India Company. He was assigned to the Punjab region and played a commendable albeit modest part in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a contribution recognized and documented in Roberts' memoir "Forty-one Years in India." Thornton's career encompassed both administrative and literary achievements, leaving a lasting impact on the historical understanding of the era.
