Mahavir Chakra awardee Field Marshal SHFJ Manekshaw was once asked who in his opinion was the best general of the Indian Army? His answer was, Of course Timley; And he explained—General Thimayya was a master strategist and planner, whose vision was beyond everyone else's. He faced many challenges and the steps he took to solve and resolve them were incomparable.
It is amazing how Thimayya became a key figure in some of the major legacies of the mid-20th century battles in Korea, Kashmir, the Chinese hegemony in Asia and Cyprus. He was the only Indian to command a brigade of the Japanese occupation forces during World War II and later in Japan. He was the only Indian general invited to the Japanese surrender ceremony in Singapore and after whom a boulevard in Nicosia, Cyprus is named. The government there has also issued a special postage stamp in his memory.
As the commander of the Punjab Border Force, he braved the horrors of partition and rescued thousands of refugees. The war he fought against the British-led Pakistani army in Kashmir shows his unmatched strategic abilities and genius. As the chairman of NNRC in Korea, he did unique work exemplifying his firmness and impartiality. This biography depicting General Thimayya's valor, nationalism, loyalty and life will prove to be very interesting and inspiring for historians, defense personnel and fans of Thimayya.
