BIOGRAPHY Scottish historian and humanist scholar George Buchanan (Scottish Gaelic: Seras Buchanan; February 1506–28 September 1582) lived in Edinburgh. During the Scottish Reformation, his philosophy of opposing regal usurpation was widely adopted. The ease with which King James VII was overthrown in 1689, according to Brown, demonstrates the influence of Buchananite ideals.
