  • Description

From one of India’s best known authors, Ghost Stories From The Raj is a collection of stories about ghosts that existed and moved about the country during the British Raj and were seen or felt by Britishers or travellers during the period.

    Summary Of The Book

Ghost Stories From The Raj contains stories of ghosts that roamed about in the country during the 19th and the 20th century. A treat for lovers of ghost tales, the speciality of the book is that it has stories about all kinds of ghosts, funny, miserable, and scary. However, one thing common about all these ghosts is that they are all entertaining in their own respective rights.

In the book, the author has compiled ghost stories from all over the world. He believes that since ghosts do not require any passport, they can turn up anywhere unexpectedly. The author, therefore, through this book presents the picture of a haunted world as seen through the eyes of outsiders, before independence. His interest in ghost stories was aroused after he read Ghost Stories Of An Antiquary written by M. R. James.
The book was published on the fiftieth anniversary of Ruskin Bond’s first book. It includes stories like The Old Graveyard at Sirur, The Return Of Imray, Caulfield's Crime, Chunia, The Men Tigers, Haunted Villages, The Summoning Of Arnold, Panther People, and The Pool.

    About Ruskin Bond

Ruskin Bond is an extremely well known and respected face in the world of books. One of the most popular children’s authors in the country, he began his career as a writer with his first novel, The Room On The Roof, at the age of seventeen.

Other books by the author are A Flight Of Pigeons, Our Trees Still Grow In Dehra, Time Stops At Shamli, A Little Night Music, Roads To Mussoorie, Rain In The Mountains and The Blue Umbrella.

Currently a resident of Mussoorie, he won several awards, including the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial Prize for his first book in 1957. He has over 500 short stories and several essays to his credit. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award For English Writing for his short story collection, Our Trees Still Grow In Dehra. He was awarded the highest civilian award of the country, the Padma Shri, for his contribution to children’s novels in 1999.

    Takes You Back......!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The impressive part of the book is not only the fact that it satisfies your thirst of those ghost stories you're looking for but also TAKES YOU BACK in times of the Raj..... A couple of the stories also helped me in getting popular with the kids in the family, they just love the super possibility of encountering a ghost at random places in the stories as truly as they are portrayed...... I know that you must not Always judge a book by its cover,
But 'Rupa & Co.' Plzzzzzzzzzzz.. work on more ...

Not sure whether all the stories mentioned in this book were real or not...But they sure did freak me out! I am an avid ghost tale lover...& it was a good change to read about Indian Ghosts...& that too from a fantastic writer like Bond..Ruskin Bond... :)
The book grips you right from the first tale...from djinns to ghostly babies to Panther people...This book has it all...& it is enough to raise the hair on your backs...

    Worth it!!!!

okay, so many people have given reviews that the book is good and many have reviewed it to be bad. From my personal opinion, this is one of the best books with horror stories that go way back in History with some of the stories clearly lifting up the Superstitions that existed among the Indians during the Raj. The stories are the narratives of the fellow britishers who were in charge of the districts and stations during that era and some of the stories are surely going to make you give secon...

    scary ??? really ???

When i chose to buy the book...i thought the book would be really scary. I was really impressed by its cover- but after reading the book i have learnt never to judge a book by its cover. Style of writing was good but the content was not good enough to scare me, in fact i found it quite boring.

    Fair

Colonial era english & poor narration. Book contains excerpts from British era regional officers and their experiences. Uninteresting to me, both the story telling & the content. Only the introduction by Ruskin Bond is somewhat interesting. Book disappoints.
