Summary of the Book

The people of The Community have never thought that they lacked anything. Life is perfect for them and they have no wants. Each family unit is allowed to have one male child and one female child, and each member of this community has their professions chosen by the Committee of Elders. It seems as though nothing could ever go wrong with them. However, when twelve year old Jonas is selected as the Receiver of Memory at The Ceremony, there are many changes in his life that he finds quite strange. There is something that is of great importance to his community that has been missing for a long time, and Jonas and The Giver are out to find out what it is. The book is written in a simple and clear manner, and will touch the hearts of many readers.
