About The Author: Charles Theophilus Ewald Rhenius (1790–1838), a German-born missionary of the Church Mission Society (CMS), was the first CMS missionary in India, earning the moniker "Apostle of Tirunelveli" for his work in the Tirunelveli district. Ordained as a Lutheran presbyter, he joined CMS, arriving in India in 1814. Rhenius engaged in missionary work in Madras, establishing schools and contributing to the revision of the Tamil Bible. In 1817, he founded the Tamil Bible Association. Departing from the Anglican Church in 1830, he started his congregation. His contributions were officially recognized in 1980.
