The Fishtail Palm has multi stem grey trunk. Each stem has 8 to 10 bipinnate leaves that can be up to 9ft long. The leaflets shaped like fishtails therefore the palm’s common name is Fishtail Palm. It produces beautiful creamy flowers that grow among the leaves. Flower stems about 12 inches are followed by tropical looking green fruits that turn dark red as they ripe. Fruit has round shape and is about ¾ inch diameter. This moderately fast growing palm can get up to 10 – 20 ft tall and 5-10 ft wide. It requires a lot of water with good drainage. To sprout the seed, plant it in a small container with a very thin layer of soil, or even only half buried. Palms do not readily sprout if they are buried too deep. Once you planted the palm seed, move the container to a very warm, very humid place. If you have a window-box in a steamy bathroom, the location should be perfect. If you don't, wrap the container in a plastic bag or plastic food wrap and place it in a warm location, like the top of your refrigerator or a warm windowsill. It takes around 4-6 months to germinate.Don't worry if the seed starts looking a little ragged while you're waiting. It's not uncommon for palm seeds to shrivel and otherwise look dead before they sprout.
