Summary Of The Book
Rajesh Chakrabarti’s Grit, Guts And Gumption: Driving Change In A State-owned Giant is the full-fledged story of the State Bank of India as it went through an impressive resurgence following a carefully crafted plan under the guidance of the chairman O. P. Bhatt.
SBI was once considered an apathetic state-owned organization that was under pressure from other competitive private firms. However, between the years 2006 and 2010, it emerged as a customer-oriented bank that surpassed its rivals, irrespective of its various limitations.
Grit, Guts And Gumption: Driving Change In A State-owned Giant was published by Viking Press in November 2010, when Chakrabarti, a professor at ISB, decided to pen down the extraordinary story of SBI, a story that was unknown to the common man.
This book tells the inspiring story of how the leaders of the bank managed to reshape the perspectives and profit graphs of the bank. It also discusses how they succeeded in achieving this miracle without withholding the salaries of any of their 200,000 employees and without any regulatory bottlenecks.
The author gives an account of the changes made in SBI’s departments of technology and human resources as well as in their processes.
The primary emphasis of the bank during the transformation period was on the attitude of its employees towards their customers and their own organization.
Grit, Guts And Gumption: Driving Change In A State-owned Giant is backed by sufficient facts, figures, and anecdotes. It not only relates the story of SBI, but also provides an inspiration to all those organizations of the public sector that have been or are in the same situation.
