  • Description
The man whom Indian nationalists perceived as the "George Washington of India" and who was President of the Indian National Congress in 1938-1939 is a legendary figure. Called Netaji ("leader") by his countrymen, Subhas Chandra Bose struggled all his life to liberate his people from British rule and, in pursuit of that goal, raised and led the Indian National Army against Allied Forces during World War II. His patriotism, as Gandhi asserted, was second to none, but his actions aroused controversy in India and condemnation in the West. Now, in a definitive biography of the revered Indian nationalist, Sugata Bose deftly explores a charismatic personality whose public and private life encapsulated the contradictions of world history in the first half of the twentieth century. He brilliantly evokes Netaji's formation in the intellectual milieu of Calcutta and Cambridge, probes his thoughts and relations during years of exile, and analyzes his ascent to the peak of nationalist politics. Amidst riveting accounts of imprisonment and travels, we glimpse the profundity of his struggle: to unite Hindu and Muslim, men and women, and diverse linguistic groups within a single independent Indian nation. Finally, an authoritative account of his untimely death in a plane crash will put to rest rumors about the fate of this "deathless hero." This epic of a life larger than its legend is both intimate, based on family archives, and global in significance. His Majesty's Opponent establishes Bose among the giants of Indian and world history.

THE ONLY LEADER WHO MATCHED GANDHIJI IN POPULARITY: INDIA'S OWN GEORGE WASHINGTON

In this book Prof Bose has shown to the world netaji in his truest form. The "revered leader" as he is known had a unparallel political foresight,a true genius who had command over international polity, domestic polity etc. his demand for "purna swaraj" whereas gandhijis wanted "dominion status" bt after 1929 gandhiji realised his mistake and became an "independencewalla" as he promised. Most of his suggestions were adopted during and after the independence of India like formation of plannin...

    TRUTH BEHIND A HERO

There are so many books that were written on Netaji Subhash Bose. But this one stands in a different league altogether. Here as we read we know how educated was our national hero, how he sacrificed his otherwise comfortable life for the independent India. His fight within the country and the Western World who considered him almost as a terrorist as he took support from the Germans . Once we start the book it takes you through the last pages ....A life of an hero...Very well written ...

Great insight into the leader's life.. truly inspiring

I have grown up reading a little about this great leader in school history books. Armed with no other detailed reference, I found this book to be very insightful. Among many facets covered, I particularly liked details of internal conflict within the biggest political party, portrayal of emotions across various stages & the the undying spirit of S C Bose. It is humbling as to what some of us born in post-independence, economically stable era take for granted.

    Definitely recommend!

    AN INTIMATE SUBHAS!

Sugata Bose deserves a "big pat" for penning a classic. This book will surely be remembered for opening up a new Subhas - an intimate Subhas, in love, penning romantic letters. The lucid style of story telling does justice to the personality Subhas Chandra Bose was and will always remain in the psyche of a million Indians. The assorted collection of pictures, handwritten letters is an added bonus!

Every Indian must read this book!

Its really very informative and painfully organized book...hats off to the author for combining all the details and organising them in perfect sequence...the emotional angle of Netaji is revealed to some extent in this books through his letters and political stands...it was really inspiring to read about his political stands, diplomatic policies and above all..the dream to build a united, corruption free and developed India" an india where there won't be any poor or low caste people...an indi...

    Netaji

Netaji is not given the due respect that he deserved. His place should be equal to Mahatma Gandhi. He was the only outstanding leader of India which took a different path and in a sense India owes more to him than to any other man.

EVERYTHING one needs to know about netaji is avilable in this book.

I started reading this book a while back and initially found it a bit boring ..but as i read further and moved into the depth i started building interest and you guys wont believe at one stage i was so eager to finish off this book that i skipped my academic studies...just to complete it. I came to know lot of things which are generally not discussed in public and Indian politics doesnt want to reveal..so my humble suggestion would be just simply go for it..dont hesitate. And yes if you think...

    Worth writing for worthy man

This book not only describes the events and happenings in Netaji's life but also explains the attitude, motive and thinking of Netaji behind those instances. This well written book explains who Netaji was, what influenced his thinking, what made him a man of such stature, what was his attitude, plan and solutions for the social, religious and economic problems, which India was facing that time.
Sugata Bose made a sincere effort to provide an unbiased explanation and details of Netaji's polit...

    Persona Extraordinaire

I had finished reading this book sometimes back. I think no amount of praise would ever justify the sacrifice this great son of India made. Coming back to this book, Prof. Bose has taken us through the tumult, tortuous yet profoundly sublime and erudite thought process of our revered Netaji through his power narratives. If one wishes to learn about the contrarian called Netaji in its truest form, this book is the only answer. Very highly recommended.
