  • Description

History and Culture of Tamil Nadu, Volume I, compiled by Chitra Madhavan, is a comprehensive book based on the uncorrupted Sanskrit inscriptions of early Tamil Nadu, under the rule of Pallavas, Pandyas, Cholas and other kingdoms. It concentrates on the then predominant socio-economic, cultural, literary, religious, and administrative archetypes.

    Summary of the Book

Inscriptions are considered as the most reliable and vital source for rebuilding the history of any place at different points in time. Epigraphs were composed in Sanskrit in Tamil Nadu, just like they were compiled across the rest of the country. Many of these inscriptions are found in Sanskrit portions of the bi-lingual copper-plate archives, which serve as a vital source of data to know more about the circumstances that existed in the Tamil speaking places. Some of them are outstanding pieces of prose and poetry, which also reveal to us the richness that this language had achieved back then. Some of the inscriptions studied for the compilation of this book belong to the periods of the Pallavas, Pandyas and Cholas. The main attention is given to the facets of civil and military administration, social and economic life, education, literature and also the religious and cultural conditions of those ages.

Slightly boring unless you are into epigraphy

As somebody who has attended several of Dr Chithra Madhavan's lectures at Tatvaloka among other places, I can say that this book, does not have the charm of the lectures. Nevertheless, this is a great book if you've a somewhat decent idea of the Pallavas, Cholas and the Pandyas. Don't expect drama and stories. This is a serious history book.
