  • Description

Home and the World, or, The Home and the World, as it was originally published, is a novel written by Rabindranath Tagore.

    Summary of the Book

This title depicts the struggle that Tagore had with himself – caught up between the ideas of Western culture and revolution against the Western culture. Nikhil is a rational man who is against violence. Sandip, on the other hand, will not let anything stand in his way from accomplishing his dreams! The story is set in the early 20th century India, depicting the political movement during the time. The book vividly describes the clash between the new and the old, idealism and realism, good and evil, and the means and the end.

    About Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore was an Indian poet, writer, and philosopher. His writings are considered the epitome of Bengali literature and several of his short stories and novels have been translated into many languages and have subsequently been adapted into hit movies. He is best remembered for: Gora, Kabuliwala, and Choker Bali. He was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, largely for the English translation of the Gitanjali. He was also conferred a knighthood by the British Empire which he renounced to protest against the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre.

    • Rabindranath Tagore was born in 1861. He was the fourteenth child of Debendranath Tagore, head of the Brahmo Samaj. The family house at Jorasanko was a hive of cultural and intellectual activity and Tagore started writing at an early age. In the 1890s he lived in rural East Bengal, managing family estates. He was involved in the Swadeshi campaign against the British in the early 1900s. In 1912 he travelled to England with Gitanjali, a collection of English poems, and won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. Tagore was knighted in 1915, an honour he repudiated in 1919 after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. In the 1920s and 1930s he lectured extensively in America, Europe, the Far East and Middle East. Proceeds from these and from his Western publications went to Visva-Bharati, his school and university at Santiniketan. Tagore was a prolific writer; his works include poems, novels, plays, short stories, essays and songs. Late in his life Tagore took up painting, exhibiting in Moscow, Berlin, Paris, London and New York. He died in 1941.

    Worth every penny

It's a wonderful purchase. Got the book at good condition. If you are searching for the Surendranath Tagore translation, it's not the one. It's a Sreejita Guha translation that seems to me quite readable and easy. And rest is known by everyone that how enriched this novel is. One must go for it.
