PREFACE
Illustrated Textbook of ENT & Head & Neck Surgery
Dr. Zakir Hussain
Otorhinolaryngology—commonly referred to as ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat)—is one of the oldest and most vital branches of medical science.
Historical records reveal that as early as 3000 BCE, Egyptian physicians were treating nasal obstructions and ear infections using rudimentary
instruments, some of which bear a striking resemblance to the tools used in modern-day ENT surgery. In ancient India, the legendary surgeon
Sushruta performed advanced procedures such as rhinoplasty, tonsillectomy, and ear surgeries—centuries before the advent of contemporary medical practices.
These early innovations underscore the enduring importance of ENT in the evolution of healthcare.
This book, Illustrated Textbook of ENT & Head and Neck Surgery, represents the culmination of over 23 years of clinical experience and academic teaching.
While I have authored several books in this field, this edition holds a special place in my heart. It has been carefully developed through decades of hands-on
practice, interaction with students, and ongoing refinement.
What truly sets this book apart is its focus on visual learning and simplicity of presentation. Designed specifically for MBBS students and undergraduate
learners, the book translates complex topics into clear, easy-to-understand illustrations and concise explanations. Its student-friendly structure makes
it an excellent tool for both first-time learning and rapid revision during exams and clinical rotations.
The textbook is fully aligned with the CBME (Competency-Based Medical Education) curriculum, making it highly relevant for today’s medical education
standards in India and beyond. Each chapter integrates key competency codes to ensure focused and outcomes-based learning. With over 870 high-quality
illustrations, clinical photographs, and radiological images, students can connect theory to real-world clinical practice.
I am deeply grateful to my family, whose unwavering support has been the backbone of this journey. My heartfelt thanks go to my parents, whose prayers
and encouragement have been a constant source of strength. I express special gratitude to my wife, Mubeen Zakir, for her steadfast companionship, and to
my daughter, Sidra Zakir, who has inspired me in countless ways. My son, Anoush, brings joy and balance to our lives. I am also thankful to my brother,
AK Shabeer, and my sister, Jabeen, for their consistent support.
A special note of appreciation goes to Mohamed Shahab and Adeela Farheen for their invaluable assistance and encouragement during the final stages of
preparing this manuscript.
I sincerely hope that this book becomes a trusted companion for medical students, serving as a comprehensive, practical, and accessible guide to mastering
ENT and Head & Neck Surgery.
Warm regards,
Dr. Zakir Hussain
