India after Gandhi: The History of the World’s Largest Democracy, written by Ramachandra Guha, is a compelling account of how India has been growing immensely as a nation despite its issues and diversity. The book especially talks about the contributions of great leaders in building the largest democracy in the world, which is still functioning as the best and the most interesting in the world.

    Summary of the Book

Dr. Guha’s scholarly genius is proved yet again in this authoritative work. Although the country has gone through and is still facing caste, class, religion and caste issues among others, it is still making its progress as the most interesting and the largest democracy in the world. It has not yielded to autocratic rule, nor has it doomed due to heterogeneity and poverty, like many had predicted. The book, while talking about history, also brings out the biographies of some of the extraordinary leaders, including Gandhi, and Nehru. The book also describes the political lives of Sheikh Abdullah, M. G. Ramachandran, Angami Zapu Phizo, and Jayaprakash Narayan among others.

    About Ramachandra Guha

Ramachandra Guha is one of the most revered Indian historian and writer. He is well known for his books: India after Gandhi, Makers of Modern India, and Gandhi before India. Dr. Guha completed his fellowship at the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta and he currently serves as the Sundaraja Visiting Professor in the Humanities at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He is also a columnist for Hindustan Times and The Telegraph. He has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan and Sahitya Akademi Award among several other recognitions. He currently resides in Bangalore.

Best book about India's modern history

India After Gandhi: The History of the World's Largest Democracy is one of the best non-fiction books I have ever read. As the name suggests, this book deals with Indian history after 1947 and history assumes the form a of a story in this book. It is not everyday that you want a voluminous history book to never end. I wonder why Indian history post independence is not taught in schools. In my opinion, this book is a must read for anyone wishing to know about India's modern and contemporary hi...

    Best in the market!

Starting with the packing of the product and it's delivery no one can beat Flipkart.
Content of the book is wide and it covers each and every aspect in detail. Yes the size of book is quite thick, but quality of words and content is up to the mark.
It's a must read book for everyone to know about our country.

Detailed account of india between 1950-2007

I liked the way Ramachandra Guha has chronicled the development of India right since independence. Its a beautiful narrative and the book is a very detailed account of India since independence. Ramchandra guha is a Nehruvian. He writes equally about Hinduism but as the book proceeds he continues more to give it a bashing like a secularist. The book is very long. Guha has done extensive research in order to write this book. The book is one of the most comprehensive one and traces a history and...

Not for UPSC. But definitely good read for today's youth on the turmoil called Independent India.

As the author himself notes, India is an experiment in democracy. That so since nobody has embarked on such an notion of a nation without a common feeling of nation-state like Europe with so many diversities. But yet we are still together and united. The turmoils and challenges after independence has been described in great detail and it is a wonderful read.

But caution to those, who suggest this book to cover the topic of " Post-Independence consolidation of India" for the UPSC exam. This ...

    Fabulous!

Guys I saved this book in my wishlist a few days back, the price was rs. 498 but i bought it for rs. 159 on the first day of big billion days offer, wait for the price drop if you don't want it right away. Anyway i just started reading it, as a book lover I can tell this book is very informative. If you really want to know about our political history, this book is your Bible. However I am not suggesting this book as a Civil Service material. For UPSC you better go with the suggestions of topp...
