  • Description

This book by acclaimed author Gurcharan Das gives its readers a view of the economic and social transformation of India. The story is based on the nation that still continues to rise from poverty to prosperity.

    Summary of the Book

The book is an interesting story of India’s economy. It discusses our country’s rise from the terror of poverty to becoming a flourishing country with many clashes in ideas that have occurred along the way. He shows us how the policies that India had made after 1947 had condemned the nation to a stumbling economy until the year 1991. After this, the government had made changes that made way for India to experience growth of unexpected heights. Das has traced all of these developments and weaved a record with contemporary history. India Unbound is the perfect book for those who want a detailed introduction to contemporary India and comes with a new afterword that updates it to 2007.

    About Gurcharan Das

Changed my view towards Top Business Houses of India...a must for MBA's

I am thankful to Mr. Gurucharan Das for such a lovely composition. Why i call composition because the book was less like a text and more of a music composition. Like the rhythm of any music raises and falls and captures you from every corner, like the tones takes you into your control and you happily surrender yourself to the surrounding created by the music and then when it ends, you feel a different world around you, exactly the same way the book takes us to the 1947 and before. It teaches ...

    Must read...'nuff said.

I first read this book 3 years ago on the recommendation of a friend. One of the best books I have ever read, and definitely the best nonfiction book on India. Das's writing style is fluid, engaging. I just wish history books in schools too were this interesting !! Though non-fiction, I am sure it will interest many a fiction lovers. The narrative is like that of an epic story of a hero/heroine named India, how it grew and changed in 3 phases, before independence, then from 1947-91 and finall...

Comprehensive history of India's transition from socialism to a liberal economy

This book provides a reasonable argument to questions in our minds as to why our country is still a developing economy.

It's interesting to read how India could leap to progress as the author throws light on the 1991 economic reforms, also quite shocked to know how the East India Company funded it's trade deficit by investing from India's trade surplus then!.
(Now, the scenario is reversed, our trade deficits are accruing year on year)
The author also talks about India's social system and how...

A beautiful analysis of contemporary India and it's economics.

This book takes one on a journey from the time of Independence to the present day India. The book is about Indian society and the successive government's economic policies. The book discusses the Nehruvian sociology alongside capitalism. Though all this sounds much to do with hard jargon of economics, yet the book will find great admirers among the simplest (non-economic background) of readers who want to understand what went wrong with India after Independence, a country which has a history ...

    Transforming and deep in insight

One reads it like a storybook, and doesn't realise when one has subconsciously devoured a treasure trove of information and insight.

It is essentially Gurcharan Das' autobiography; only that he talks less about how his life changes and more about how the India around him transforms. From 1947 right up to the 2000s.

Everyone should read this book, to understand the contemporary history of India.
