Financial struggles led him to write, and he published two collections of folktales, translated Shakespeare into Tamil, and taught Indian languages at prestigious universities. Returning to Madras, he earned a formidable reputation as a barrister and amassed considerable wealth. At his death in 1897, he left behind an unfinished lengthy Sanskrit and English poem titled Rajangala Mahodyanam: or, the Great Park of Rajangala.
