Ini Njan Urangatte (Malayalam, Paperback, Balakrishnan P.K.)
This edition of renowned Malayalam novelist P. K. Balakrishnan’s second novel, Ini Njan Urangatte, published originally in 1973, and considered a classic bestselling novel of Malayalam Literature, is based on the epic tale of Mahabharata.
Summary Of The Book
Ini Njan Urangatte (Malayalam) was written by the noted Malayalam novelist and historian P. K. Balakrishnan. The title of the novel when translated into English, means ‘And Now Let Me Sleep’.
The novel, based on the great ancient epic of the Mahabharata, centers around the story of Karna as its pivotal character, as portrayed through the point of view of Draupadi’s character. While the book retains the original theme and underlying atmosphere surrounding the two thousand year old epic, it is highly imaginative in its structure, and depiction of these original events.
Ini Njan Urangatte (Malayalam) follows the story of Karna alongside an ingeniously constructed parallel storyline of Draupadi, and the two themes are intricately meshed in, to form an intriguing plot. While it adds its own creative flavour to the story of Mahabharata, it maintains the sanctity and original theme of the great epic, distinguishing it from other works based on the Mahabharata. In this sense, the book has three different focal points, and is created with the hope that the final image thus created, will take a shape of its own.
A timeless classic, Ini Njan Urangatte (Malayalam) has been praised unanimously for its unprecedented use of lofty language, and depth, and is regarded as one of the best examples of Malayalam literature. A consistent bestseller since it was first published in 1973, it has been hailed as a classic in Indian literature, and translated into many different languages including, English, Tamil, and Kannada. It received multiple awards and recognition, including, the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award (1974), the Vayalar award (1978), and the Sahitya Pravarthaka Benefit Fund award.
