  • Description

Into Thin Air is a record of a 24 hour period on Everest that ended tragically. Eight people were reported dead after having faced harsh conditions because of the hurricane-force winds.

    Summary or the Book

When the members of three separate groups go on an expedition to the Everest, they are caught in a fierce storm of winds, exposure and the effects of altitude. This resulted in the highest death toll that took place in a single season in the peak’s history. It was the year 1996 and Outside magazine had sent Jon Krakauer, a veteran journalist and seasoned climber, on an expedition led by Rob Hall who was a celebrated Everest guide. However, this was not of any advantage to those who went on the expedition as, despite Hall’s expertise and the guidance of other leaders, eight people had died at the end of the summit day. In his book, Jon tells his readers the story of the ill-fated day and gives us an analysis of the factors that lead to the tragic and horrific end. He has also mentioned the triumphs of other Everest expeditions in history, and gives us a view of the Everest landscape through his writing. The book also speaks of the author’s own anguish.

Worth every penny and every minute

An extremely well written and detailed account of things that were experienced by the author on Everest.

One has to understand that when accidents like this one occur, it is often very difficult to get a completely accurate account of what exactly went wrong since most of the people did not live to tell their tale. Having said that, the author has done a very impressive job to write a gripping and unbiased sequence of events that unfolded that day in 1996.

It's worth a read by every standard.

Into Thin Air...Perspective of an avid reader and adventure lover

Even before I brought this book, I was aware of the controversies evoked by 'Into Thin Air' which further augmented my curiosity. The only thing I have to add after reading it, is that, my curiosity has been awarded with a mesmerizing awe. The author has depicted a picture of the ascent and the subsequent miseries in the Everest mission of 1996 with such mastery that several times I developed a belief that I was watching the progression of events in person. There isn't ever a slack moment. K...

    An Adventure to read through.

Into Thin Air is one of those rare books which keep lingering in your mind for a long time after you finish reading. That's partly because the incidents are true. But I don't think any one other than Jon could translate that tragedy to words in a better fashion. He begins by asserting that climbing is not really a decision that comes out of rational thinking. He quotes George Mallory's famous reply to the question "Why do you want to climb Mount Everest?" with the answer "Because it's there" ...

A good read. Disappointed with the end though!

Made famous purely by the incidents which killed a good number of people on the highest of the mountains, this book gives a view of the incidents from the author's perspective. Make no mistake, this is a good book. I might even say that it borders to greatness. But then, you are pulled back to reality when you start to read the last part of the book. A good number of pages are wasted in discrediting one of the most famous climbers of the era.

All in all, a good read. Pick it up if you don't...

    An intense read!

I started reading this book today morning at around 10:00am. At the time of writing this review I have just closed the book. I simply couldn't put it down!

Jon Krakauer gives a no-frills honest personal account of the tragedy witnessed in 27 hours between the 9-11 May of 1996 which he refers to as the worst single season tragedy on Everest. I simply can't wait to read 'The Climb' which is the account of Anatoli Boukreev, a guide whose judgement and actions have been questioned by Krakauer in...
