The plan of the book is based on that of the courses of lecture given by the writer during some six years at Cambridge. Those courses have naturally varied somewhat from year to year; the subject has made very great advances during the period, and the experience of each year has led to modifications in the year that followed. But the general plan has remained the same, and the writer believes that it has provided to be a kind to attract the interest of students not previously familiar with the subject, and that therefore a book of the kind might prove to be of value to students in other laboratories.
