Introduction to Sedimentology  (English, Paperback, Sengupta S.M.)

This book presents a concise account of all the major branches of sedimentology highlighting the connecting links between them. The text based mostly on the courses taught by the author over the years is designed to cater to the needs of the students at various levels. The first three chapters are written in a style suitable for the undergraduate students of geology. The subsequent chapters are for those at the M.Sc. Level. Research workers on sedimentology will find the exhaustive list of references and numerous illustrations drawn both from Indian and foreign sources useful. The text of the second edition has been updated to include the current developments in sedimentology. A new chapter Structures of Chemical and Biological Origin has been added. The discussions on carbonate sedimentation have been elaborated and the techniques of palaeocurrent analysis have been discussed in some detail.

About the Author
S. M. Sengupta did post-doctoral research on sedimentology at the Universities of Groningen the Netherlands; and Uppsala Sweden. Sengupta started his professional career as a Geophysicist of the Standard- Vacuum Oil Company working in the Bengal Basin in nineteen fifties. Later he served the faculties of Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata and Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur as Professor of Geology. He retired from I.I.T. Kharagpur as Professor and Head of the Department of Geology & Geophysics. Since then he had been continuing research as a Senior Scientist of INSA. Noted for his contributions to sedimentology Prof. Sengupta was twice elected to the Council of the International Association of Sedimentologists. He also served as Indias National Correspondent to this Association. He is a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and the Geological Mining & Metallurgical Society of India. He is also a Life-Member of the Indian Association of Sedimentologists and the Gondwana Geological Society of India. He co-edited the Indian Journal of Geology for several years.
