No other writer in Malayalam has achieved Basheer's narrative technique. Nor has the reader. The techniques of Maupassant, who can take the reader to any point in the plot, and Chekhov, who can create suffocating atmospheres, come together in Basheer.

Vaikom Muhammad Basheer (1908-1994)
He was born on 21 January 1908 in Thalayolaparambi, Vaikom taluk. He studied at the Malayalam School in Thalayolaparambi and the Vaikom English School. He joined the Indian National Congress and participated in the Salt Satyagraha held in Kozhikode as part of the freedom struggle. He was tortured and imprisoned for it. He traveled all over India for ten years; later in countries such as Africa and Arabia. His works Balyakalsakhi, Pathummayude Aadu, and Ntuppuppakkoranenndarnn! have been translated and published in all the major languages of India. His works Mathilukul, Shabdangal, and Premalekhanam and a collection of 16 stories including Poovanpazham were published in Orient Longman English. He has received the fellowship of the Sahitya Akademi and the Kerala Sahitya Akademi. He was honored by the Government of India with the Padma Shri. He died on 5 July 1994.
